How is a great question to ask when something has happened. However as an exclamation "HOW!", it is much stronger. Jeremiah (our author) is asking the Holy Spirit how this could happen to God's city and His people. The answer is obvious, they left the ways of God for the ways of man and the devil. They relied on men for safety, for food, for advice, for everything. They forsake the Lord. When this happens there is no recourse back to the Lord without Christ. Without the Lord at our side, we open up too many holes and weaknesses and shall not last long in this state. The Load of sin is too great for men to carry. If not for Jesus, we would have to carry our sin like a yoke on a ox. Christ carries our load for us. The ultimate sacrifice for man. Jeremiah reminds us not to rejoice in the peril or bad events of others. Those bad events happen to all and we should feel pain for all or ask for more for ourselves.
Happy 4th!
