As Boaz conducts his business with the other man, in sight of the Elders of the City, Boaz gives away his opportunity to marry Ruth and receive the land and inheritance of Naomi. He first offer it to the other man as Boaz himself is not next in line of the kinsmen and Ruth nor Naomi's estate is his to claim until after this other man. The other man willingly gives it over as he cannot for marring his own inheritance. Boaz claims Ruth and Naomi's estate as his in front of the elders and as custom was, received a shoe from the other man. Signifying that he would not walk on that land any longer, or giving up his rights to it would be a better way to say it. The sacrifice Boaz makes in the same sacrifice Christ made for us. Christ gave up all His rights as free man created by God to live a sinless life and be the martyr we never asked for nor did we deserve. Boaz turns himself over to the other man as Christ turned over His life to the Lord. Willingly stepping aside of our desires is another way to describe what Boaz did. He (by Law and custom), had no claim to Ruth or Naomi's estate until after the other man gave it to him. What do we willingly give way for to receive the greater gift? Do we push aside our selfish needs and wants to allow for God to live in our hearts? This is the sacrifice of Boaz.
The elders blessed the passing of Ruth and Naomi's estate unto Boaz in many ways. Little did they know their blessings would be little compared to those the descendants of Ruth and Boaz would be. For Jesus Christ himself was born from this family tree in Bethlehem no less. The son immediately conceived and born of Ruth and Boaz became Naomi's. He was Obed and was the father of Jesse, the father of David. Meaning Ruth is the great grandmother of David! The family tree of David is tremendous and amazing. God works in amazing ways and always keeps His promises, even in the times of our greatest doubts. Always trust in Him fully, for He and He alone is the answer to all of our troubles.
