In this parable of the marriage feast, the marriage is not a typical event. It is the marriage of Christ to us. God set up this marriage and we are meant to keep it. The marriage was planned to be to Israel but she rejected the Son and made light of the ways of God and His request. The continued denial of Jesus and the refusal to repent for their sins in their greed. Those left behind after the announcement to Israel that were not believers persecuted those that did and spited and slew them. The time of the early church was wonderful for its many blessings and yet it was full of evils. When the Father heard, “He was wroth… and burned their city”- Verse 7. Jesus prophecies this and it happens in 70 AD. The Father changes His direction and directs His followers to spread the word and welcome all for Israel was not worthy. Good and bad equally needed saved as without God we are all lost. This is the growth of the church. Predicted while Christ was alive. If we arrive at the wedding in our plain clothes and the clothes we wear as men, we are destined to be rejected. We must disrobe and put on His garments, for ours are faulty and His are pure. The only way to robe ourselves in Him is through repentance and sacrifice of our self righteous selves.
In verses 15-22 the Pharisees try to trick Jesus into saying something wrong. How foolish of them to match the wits of God. How foolish of us to match the wits of God as well. We cannot fool Him with our trick and our guile. He sees right into our hearts. Do not be like the Pharisees. Be open and honest with God and receive His blessings.
In the Resurrection we are all free angels and all live. Each is given wings and is equal in the eyes of God. There is no longer marriage or quarrel. Our God is the God of the living. Not of the dead. Our souls are immortal. Where does your soul desire to reside?
Not all of the Old Law is dead within the New Covenant. Jesus says in verse 37-40 that the first 2 commandments and the greatest of them all and in that order in particular. Without loving God, we cannot love the way that God desires us to love. Our love as men is weak and shatters us into pieces. Love from God is eternal is never broken. It is a stronger more powerful love than the love of man. Pray for this love in our lives.
Jesus, being God, continues to take the religious leaders to school inside the temple. After Jesus questions how the Messiah can be David’s Son and His Lord and answers it, no more challenged Him. Lord, help us to understand the Word in the same way that you do. Help it transform our lives and for us to use the word in the ways that you would have us. Amen.
