Mary and Mary were headed to see Jesus’s body and to put spices on it. On their way the earth shook! The second earthquake , the first being Christ’s death, and this one symbolizing His rising from the dead. An unearthly event causes the earth to shake and tremor. Even the earth itself knows when the Christ and His actions change the course of mankind. The soldiers who were guards in the tomb (at Pilate’s request), were terrified by an angel that came and rolled back the stone and then sat upon it. The soldiers were the only one to see the angel perform the act. But that is who needed to see it. The soldiers ran away. The women arrived at the tomb and were surprised by the angel and the empty tomb. The angel told the Mary’s that “He is not here: for He is risen, as He said.” - Verse 6. The angel then instructs the women to go tell the disciples. And tell the disciples where they will find him, in Galilee. The only ones with belief still are the 2 Mary’s. The 11 (now that Judas has ended his own life), cower in fear and do nothing with their “fallen” Lord. Even the great Peter cannot hold himself strong enough in faith to gather to the Lord. A Risen savior is the backbone of the New Testament. Had he not died for us, then we would all be destined to perish as well. Be not like the disciples, but show your faith always and never hide for the Lord will protect you.
The women go into the tomb and find nothing there until Jesus appears to them. They touch His body and the women know that He has overcome death. The women then run to the disciples. For they have great news to share!
The soldiers reported to the Sanhedrin as it was at their request that the tomb be guarded. They told all that had happened. The Sanhedrin paid off the soldiers to be quiet about it and rehearsed a story to tell the people. How could they not know in their hearts the evil they spoke? Overcome by demons of Sin and evil were these men. Avoid being like these horrible men. And push away the false prophets and demons in our lives. Trust in the Lord and the demons cannot touch you.
When the Disciples meet Jesus on a mountain in Galilee, none of the 11 doubt Him. Jesus proclaims His power in verse 18 - “ And Jesus came and spoke unto them saying, All power is given unto Me in Heaven and in Earth.” Jesus tells us that He has all the power over the entire Godly creation (Earth) as well as the heavens. The entire cosmos is at His disposal. Without accepting Him, the Holy Spirit will not be instructed to fall upon us. Without the Holy Spirit our souls will not be saved. And if our soul isn’t saved… well… let’s not go there.
Christ continues to tell the Disciples instructions. go preach to all nations. And gives the baptismal instructions we all use today. Teach them the whole covenant and things I have taught you. For I will be with you and yours always until your time has come. Christ is eternal and will be us when we need Him and when we don’t. Look to Him in times of need and times of plenty. Connect with God over all things.
