Nehemiah in his service to the king has a sad countenance about him and the king noticed. This caused Nehemiah to be afraid as the king could have one executed for not showing joy in his presence. But the king took pity and was curious why his servant was sad. Nehemiah explained the sadness was caused by the damage done to Jerusalem. He loved it and its people because they belonged to God. The king asked what request Nehemiah wanted to make. Nehemiah instantly prayed a silent prayer to God for guidance and help in his request to the king. He asked to go rebuild Jerusalem. The king said yes! Nehemiah asked for safe travel from the governors and for wood from the forests for the temple. God worked through the king and Nehemiah so that they could work together to bring Jerusalem bad to the power it needed to be. Did you catch the little prayer? That made all the difference. A small prayer with God can solve our problems and give us the missing pieces of our questions. God will show us the way if we let Him.
The king gave Nehemiah escorts in his journey. Soldiers to keep him safe. There were those along the way that discounted his actions and spoke against him. God’s Will shall always have opposition. It is our job to fight that opposition and rise above the plight of man. God’s purpose will reign supreme over the ides of man.
After 3 days rest Nehemiah inspected the walls under cover of darkness and found the brokenness he feared. The walls were torn down so badly that his horse could not pass and the gates so broken they may as well not even be there. Nehemiah tells his companions that they should build so that the walls be no more a reproach. Nehemiah tells them of his God. And what He hath done. The Holy Spirit was then in these men and they agreed to build. Nehemiah testified and supported the case to rebuild the walls for His God. When we are working in His name, we have His watchful eye and His support.
The world pushes back on Nehemiah again and he finally opens up about the purpose he has been given! We cannot fall victim to the failures of man but trust in the direction of God. He always knows what we need. He provided for a cup bearer to rebuild the Holy City, what can He provide for us!!
