Many Jess were under oppression from others and other Jews! We learned in Leviticus that the Jews were not supposed to charge each other interest in their loans. It seems as though that was happening! Now there is a drought. I wonder why! Every time the Jews abandon God, He sends a weather event or something similar their way as a sign to return to Him! What signs are we missing in our day to day that He is sending for us? Many Jews were working as endured slaves to pay off their debts on their own land which then was controlled by the loaners. What attitude is this taken amongst us? Are we in agreement with others and tempted by sin to take more than what is ours? The temptation for moar is a sin we must fight and not fall victim to as the wealthy Jews here did.
The rulers of the Jews paid Nehemiah little heed when he came before them with his plea for the oppressed Jews. Because of this he called a great assembly of all the people. Nehemiah tried to convince all the people to return the belongings that had been wrongfully acquired to their fellow Jews. He did this with fear of punishment of God. This is a resemblance of the forgiveness of the sins Christ gives us. Forgiveness is vital to the mindset of Christians. Without it our sin nature takes over and we cannot see past previous sin. Nehemiah’s attempt succeeded! The Holy Spirit was with him that day for certain! How do we get the Holy Spirit to act with us?
Nehemiah was chosen to be governor over the Jews for the Persian empire. He took not of the people, unlike his predecessors in the role. What he did he also asked others to do. We should see this and be willing to do what we ask of others! He never accepted payment for his duty to the people and provided for him and his court himself. What honor he had. The Lord looked upon him with favor as he served not himself. How can we not serve ourselves?
