There is a clarifying statement made in this chapter. Verse 4 & 5 say, "You shall do My judgements, and keep My Ordinances, to walk therein: I am the Lord your God. You shall therefore keep My Statutes and My Judgements: which if a man do, he shall live in them: I am the Lord." If we follow His commandments, His laws, and submit to His judgements, we are to live (eternally). Yet, we all know we cannot keep God's statutes and the like from the Old Testament. We are man and will always be without. Which is why Jesus had to come and bear the Cross for our sins. Through Christ all of mankind may be saved. The true belief that Jesus Christ died for us and submitted His life so I could live forever is so warming to my heart. Be joyful and full of praise.
Verses 6-17 speak of a law that is important and something that is frowned upon even yet today. Incest is forbidden. End of story. The plurality of verses covering this is to leave no doubt or holes in the law for man to exploit. Man without God is evil and will seek out the holes in the Law. There is no sensible reason to do this, yet it is important that we continuously look for ways to do exactly that!
Starting in verse 19 we get more clarity from God on some other loose ends that need tied up. Do not approach a woman sexually on her period. Do not lie carnally with your neighbor's wife, do not commit adultery. Do not let any of your seed pass through the fire of Molech. Do not allow your child to be sacrificed. Do not use the Name of God profanely. You shall not lie with mankind, as with womankind. Do no lie with the same sex, "it is an abomination". Do not lie with the beasts of the world or submit yourself to a beast. "It is confusion"
Verses 24-30 give warning over what our behavior should be as we move into the promised land. The heathen have defiled the land they occupy because they have not followed God's word. If we do not keep His Word, we will also defile our land. He cast out the heathen, He can also cast us out. Fear is necessary to give God the respect and credence that He so clearly deserves. We are to proclaim our fealty to Him and submit to His teachings. This is so difficult at times to put away our feelings and move away from the weakness of man and into the strength of God. Is this not counter intuitive? So is man and his failures. Be enlightened by the Word and embrace the love of God.
