The evils we face in life are innumerable. If God blesses our lives with riches and fills our desires, but fails to give us the ability to partake of those blessings, it is vanity. Meaning, the man did not give God the glory. Without praising God for our blessings, they will not last and we are destined to lose them all. Verse 3: “than an untimely birth is better than he.” This is in reference to the man without God. No matter the length of life or the number of children, if the “soul be not filled with good”- verse 3, then man hath nothing. Do you have nothing — or have you given it to the Lord?
Verse 4 says; “For he comes in with vanity, and departs in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.” This is the fate for the unbeliever. All men (and women) come into this world with vanity because of the Fall. If we don’t know the Lord we depart from the world in darkness. If we knew not the Lord then both our name and body will be doomed for eternity. The only way to be free from this cycle is to confess the Lord, Jesus Christ, as our Savior. This is true for all of mankind. Verse 6 tells us that plainly: “ Yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet has he seen no good: do not all go to one place?” Without God, and the goodness He brings, we are doomed to all go to the same place, Hell. The only separation from other men we receive is whether or not we believe in the Father. What side of this separation are you on? Is your appetite filled with the Lord — or is your labor without sustenance for your soul ?
Verse 9 helps to bring us back toward a more positive instruction: “Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this is also vanity and vexation of the spirit.” To see is no sin, but to constantly seek the next thing with a wandering heart and desire will get you nothing. That next thing will not sustain you, nor will the subsequent things. The path man runs down is a faulty path! Are the soles of your shoes gilded by the Spirit to help us avoid the holes and twists along this route? Ask God to show you where to place your feet and your mind. If your heart and soul is with Him already, He will show you the way.
This chapter ends with a security that I don’t always see in the Word: Verses 10-12: “That which has been named is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he contend with him who is mightier than he.” “Seeing there be many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?” “For who knows what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spends as a shadow? For who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?” Our destination with God has already been predetermined. We have no power on this earth. But through the Lord we can be fulfilled in this life. Using more words and fluff and vain talk to justify our desires does us little good. If anything it harms our faith. As the last chapter told us, we do not have to speak many words to be with God. This is emphasized in the last verse. We do not have the answers to the mysteries of this world. Not even Solomon did! Trust in the Lord to supply the answers we seek. Have you been following the Lord’s instruction or seeking the answers on your own? Are we folly in our behavior or steadfast in His love ?
