Solomon brings the heat right out of the gate in Verse 1: "For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knows either love or hatred by all that is before them." Slow down and read that verse with more intention. What is Solomon saying to you? To me, he is saying that no matter who we are or what we do, we cannot measure our acts. That ruler belongs to God. The trials each of us face in our lives are gifts. Others have their own battles to fight. God's judgement comes equally to all.
We are only assured of one thing in this life. That is death. Verse 3 says: "This is an evil among all tings that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all; yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead." In a life without God, our hearts are consumed by evil and madness. With God, we can be raised from the peril of the fall of man and be cleansed of this burden. This will always exist in our hearts and our reliance on the Lord will allow us to overcome our plight. Hope for salvation only exists while we are alive. Once we die, there is no do over and His judgement will be final. Are you ready to overcome?
Verse 10 ties together the next lesson: "Whatsoever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, where you go." The might is the belief, devotion, and reverence for God. It should be the thing that we have above all else. Our strongest feature if you will. Holding work, devices, knowledge, or wisdom above God will doom us to Hell. Where none of these earthly things are present. Is your belief held with all your might?
The parable to end this chapter is so fitting. Verse 14, 15 & 16: "There was a city, few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it and built great bulwarks against it: Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man. Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor mans wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard." Man responds to strength over wisdom and the wise are often forgotten. What else do we all too often forget?... The Word. It holds the wisdom of God and how we can apply that wisdom to our lives. As we are men, we must remember where our strength and our might is best placed. Display your wisdom in quiet rooms, where the fools abstain from joining. Verse 18 says "Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroys much good." The battle we face every day to overcome our sin can be undone by another sinner. Have faith the Lord will protect your works. Done in His name, we shall receive His blessings, if He would give them to us. Where do you seek for wisdom? Can you place your might in Him above all else?
