Mark begins his version of the gospel with the story of John the Baptist. Verse 2 is a clarifier that leaves little doubt about the purpose of John: “And it is written in the Prophets, Behold, I send My Messenger before Your Face, which shall prepare Your Way before You.” John’s purpose and duty was to prepare the Earth for Jesus. It is rung from the Old Testament to the new. The Lord’s messaging is consistent. Do you feel the safety and consistency that Jesus offers us? He is our “Rock of Salvation” after all.
In John’s duty to prepare the world, he baptized with the river of Jordan. Often when Israelites would be baptized they would also be confessing their sins. It is amazing that God can work through the unfaithful and transform them to be baptized by a man in the woods. But John didn’t just baptize, he also preached. In verse 7 he says: “There comes One mightier than I after me, the latched of Whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.” He continues in verse 8: “I indeed have baptized you with water; but He shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” John was telling Israel that there was someone coming. That someone was Jesus. Upon hearing those words, would you be able to pivot from the faith you had learned? Only through God is a pivot to Him possible. What else is possible with our God?
Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in verse 9. Immediately thereafter the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus like a dove. Verse 11: “And there came a Voice from Heaven saying, You are My Beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased.” The Lord, God, spoke to Jesus directly. This is our first encounter of the Holy Spirit, God, and Jesus all together. The Trinity is real. How strong would your faith be if you witnessed this? How strong is it now that you read it? Why is there a difference? Pray for the Lord to help you make up the difference and praise His name for eternity.
The Angels kept Jesus sustained in the desert with Satan over those 40 days and nights that the temptations occurred. How I would flounder in such a scenario. Would you also sink, like me?
Jesus begins His tour in Galilee. In Verse 15 Jesus says: “The time is fulfilled and the Kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye and believe the Gospel.” Did you notice what Jesus did there? Only 2 things to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Repent of our sins in asking for forgiveness of all of our wrongs, past, present, and future. Believing the Gospel is what we are doing here. Read the Word consume it and allow it to consume you. Let the lessons hit home. Live a life with God and in His Kingdom you will be destined to be. Is it your destiny?
Jesus begins to gather the disciples in the next set of verses. Verse 17 is well quoted in church sermons and sticks out here: “And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.” Are you prepared to pick up your net and catch men for the Lord?
Jesus and his new disciples went into the synagogue in Capernaum. Verse 22 says: “And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.” How can this be a surprise to us who believe? Christ is one with God, knows the Word, and speaks with authority. This is the first demonstration of Christ’s authority over the Word and makes the New Testament the overriding principle of our belief. We are saved because of Jesus and our faith in Him. Are we prepared to accept Christ as our authority?
Christ banished a demon out of a possessed man in the synagogue. Verse 27 says: “And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.” Christ continues to demonstrate His authority over the entire cosmos. How does a man with this level of power and influence not be the center of our focus? After Jesus heals Simon’s wife’s mother of her fever with only his touch, Verse 27 says: “And all the city was gathered together at the door.” Capernaum noticed, will you?
Verse 35 says: “And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.” Jesus went to pray in the morning. Prayer is as important to Jesus as anything. The relationship He had with the Father is what we should strive for. What is your relationship with God like? Does it reflect Ecclesiastes and give Him all our trust as Christ does?
Jesus and His disciples move on about the area and teach and heal and cast out devils. After healing a leper, who had faith that Jesus could heal Him and bowed before Him, Jesus gave instructions to this man. Verse 44:“ And saith unto him, See thou say nothing to any man: but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.” Verse 45 tells us what that man does with the instruction: “But he went out, and began to publish it much, and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter.” This man betrayed Christ and His order. It caused His fame to grow so much that He could not minister as He was told to by the Lord. This man with such great faith, couldn’t even follow a direction from Christ Himself. Do you see your reflection in this man? The entire Bible is instruction to all of us. How much of God’s word do we follow - and how often are we like the healed leper, inhibiting the intentions of the Lord?
