When Jesus leaves the Temple, one of the Disciples notices the beauty of the temple and the area around it. Verse 2 says: “And Jesus answering said unto him, Seest thou these great buildings? There shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.” The Temple and all of Jerusalem will be destroyed. No stone left upon another is a powerful line. This tells us that the destruction will be complete.
The Disciples needed more clarity from Jesus and Peter, James, John and Andrew asked Him privately, in Verse 4: “Tell us when shall these things be? And what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled?” They asked directly when the Temple would fall. Jesus answered them with a warning. Be cautious for man will try to deceive you. This is a warning to us as well. Satan’s deception through men is a constant we must be cautious of. Jesus warns of false prophets coming in His name. Do not fall for this deception. There is only one Christ and when He comes again, we will be certain that it is Him. There will be no doubt. In Verse 7 Jesus continues: “And when you shall hear of wars and rumors of wars, be ye not troubled: for such things must needs be; but the end shall not be yet.” The world is destined to constantly be in upheaval. With the rejection of God from Israel, this region is destined to war constantly. Nations and kingdoms will fight but we are not to be distracted from the mission Christ gives us. Focus on Him and His purpose for us; to spread the Word to the World. Christians will be turned over to government and judged as Jesus will be judged by man. We are not to be fearful of how men will judge us. Their judgment means little. The judgment of God is the judgment we must be wary of. How will you be judged? Verse 13 says: and you shall be hated of all men for My Name’s sake: but he who shall endure until the end, the same shall be saved.” We all must accept the judgement of man and endure it. Hold the Lord above all, always. Is this where you hold the Lord?
Verse 14-18 warn us of the moving of the Antichrist, the abomination of desolation. Israel will be defeated and he will place himself in the temple. This will be our sign that evil has come. The end of Verse 14 says: “the let them who be in Judea flee to the mountains.” Jesus tells those to make haste and hurry to leave. Go not into your house for your possessions or your clothes. Leave immediately and hope that there is good weather. Are you prepared to leave where you are and seek refuge when the Antichrist comes?
In the days of the Antichrist, the affliction on the world will be as it never has been before. Jesus tells us in Verses 20-23 that the days will be shortened and no flesh shall be saved. The Antichrist will kill men in numbers never seen before. That is why we are to flee! How the Lord will shorten the days we can only guess, but He hath the power! If any man try to convince us that the Antichrist is the Christ, “believe him not” - Verse 21. Verse 23 ends the warning, saying, “But take ye heed: behold I have foretold you all things.” Jesus tells us that He has told us what is to come. We are to be wary. “Take ye heed” rings through these Verses as a constant warning for all of us. Do you hear the warning and are you ready to react if the time comes?
Jesus continues His sharing of the future to come. Verse 24 says: “But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light.” The world will go into darkness and there will be stars falling from the heavens. Verse 26 says: “And then shall they see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.” Then the angels shall come and gather His elect to the Heaven. This group of Verses tells us that we will all see Jesus come to this Earth. It will be so obvious that He is here that none can doubt that it is truly Him. He will gather the remaining Jews and the Christians to Heaven and lift them up from the perils of this world. Are you ready for Christ to carry you to Heaven? Do you have doubts of your status as worthy?
Jesus compares Israel to a fig tree in Verse 28. When the branches are young and put forth their leaves, the time of His coming in near. Israel is a nation again and her leaves are growing. Is His time also coming? Verse 31 reminds us of the permanence of Jesus and God’s words saying: “Heaven and Earth shall pass away: but My Words shall not pass away.” God is forever. Will you spend eternity with Him?
Verse 32 says: “But of that day and that hour knows no man, no, not the Angels which are in Heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.” Only God knows when His Son will be sent forth again unto our world. Any prognostication by man is only that. Jesus tells us that man cannot know! This is a problem we all face. The pursuit of knowledge for the sake of this world. We need not concern ourselves with this information. Pursue the Lord and His knowledge above all else. He will show us the way until God decides otherwise. Verse 33 says: “Take ye heed, watch and pray: for you know not when the time is.” Do you submit to Him in this way? Is your heart clouded by the pursuit of men?
Christ ends this chapter with a warning. In Verse 36 and 37 He says: “Lest coming suddenly He find you sleeping.” “And what say I unto you I say unto you all, Watch.” Do not be caught asleep in our faith. Stay spiritually awake and alive in the Lord. Keep watch for the Lord because we will know not when He comes and should be ready to be His at any time. Are you waiting for Him to come to proclaim your faith? If you have proclaimed your faith, what is holding you back from being ready for Christ to return?
