Mark 14: During the Passover feast, Jesus and His Disciples sat in the house of Simon the Leper in Bethany. A woman came and broke a box of ointment of spikenard very precious and poured it on Jesus’s head. The Disciples asked her why she did this! They considered it a waste of the ointment. They could have sold it and given the money to the poor. Verse 6 says: “And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye here? She has wrought a good work on Me.” Jesus continues in Verse 7: “For you have the poor with you always, and when so ever you will you may do them good: but Me you have not always.” This woman came to anoint the body before the Resurrection. She seems to separate herself from the herd here. The Disciples did not understand and fully grasp the death and Resurrection of Christ, yet this woman had the Holy Spirit working in her heart. How could the Twelve not understand what is to come and how spiritual a gift this woman gave to the Lord. She will be remembered forever for this act. How will the Lord commemorate your life?
In Verses 10 and 11 we are told of Judas, one of the Twelve, went unto the Chief Priests to betray Jesus. Verse 11 says: “And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. And sought how he might conveniently betray Him.” The Chief Priests were excited that their desires were going to be fulfilled through a Disciple of Christ. With Satan in control of these men, demonstrated through their behavior of greed and lifting up themselves above other, this was an obvious victory for the devil. These Verses are set apart to show the betrayal of Judas and be an example of how weak man can be. Greed took hold in Judas, does it also control us? Do we sin in the name of greed in spite of what we know is right?
Jesus sent two of the Twelve to find the place in the city where they would eat the lamb that was killed for the Passover. The Disciples asked and Christ did not disappoint. They met a man carrying a pitcher of water and this man led them to a house. Verse 15 says: “
And He (the owner of house) will show you a large upper room furnished and prepared; there make ready for us.” The Two followed these instructions and went forth to the city and found the man and followed him to the house that was ready for the Twelve and the Passover feast. The Spirit led Jesus to know this and the men to work ahead of time to be ready for the Lord in their home. Is your home furnished and prepared for the Lord?
That evening they all went forth to the house. Verse 18 says: “And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eats with Me shall betray Me.” They were not prepared to hear this and it caused them great sorrow. They began to ask, one by one, “is it I?”. Verse 21 says: “The Son of Man indeed goeth, as it is written of Him: but woe that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! Good were it for that man if he had never been born.” Jesus knows He was predestined to this outcome, but the sadness of the man who would turn Him over was so great that there was no forgiveness for it. Because of this, it would be as though his soul had never lived. We are blessed that we are saved in spite of our actions. Do you seek forgiveness of your sins no matter how great they may be?
The Lord’s supper occurs next and the Twelve consume of the same food and drink of Jesus. We do this on Sunday to commemorate this event. The bread must be broken and the blood must be shed for Christ to die for our sins. The flesh is the bread and the drink is the blood. In the same manner, our nature of sin must be broken. Then Christ can reshape us in His image. Without breaking our nature, there is little Christ can do for us. Will you give in to the breaking of our own flesh so the Lord can be in control?
They then went to the Mount of Olives. Verse 27 says: “And Jesus said unto them, All you shall be offended of Me this night: for it is written, I will smite the Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.” Verse 28 continues: “But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee.” Peter, in his bravery, steps forward and says that he will not flee. Jesus tells Peter that he will deny Him three times before the morning comes. Peter did not believe the words of Jesus. He was too caught up in his fervor for Him that he could not hear what He was saying. Peter vows that he would never do this. Peter had not yet had his flesh broken by the Lord, and his flesh was still weak with the nature of man. This weakness breaks his vow and blinds his ears to the Words of the Lord. Are we also blinded by the weakness of our sinful nature?
Jesus told His Disciples to sit down while He goes to pray. Jesus also had to pray to receive the guidance of God. Do you pray as Christ does? He set apart Peter, James, and John and began to feel heavy. Verse 34 says: “And said unto them, My Soul is exceedingly sorrowful unto death: tarry you here and watch.” Jesus felt the emotion of having His time on this world coming to an end. There is no doubt He knew it was to come, yet the fear of reality set in. Jesus falls on the ground and prays that the hour might pass from Him. A feeling of dread overcame Him, and He asked for help for it to pass. Verse 36 says: “And He said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto You; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what You will.” Jesus asks to be relieved of His emotions so that He does not alter the will of God. He wanted to submit but is struggling to do so. So He turns Himself over to the Will of God. Can we do the same?
He returned to the Three He separated from the rest and found them sleeping. Verse 38 says: “Watch ye and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The Spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.” Again Jesus is speaking of His struggle with the weakness of the flesh. He goes to pray again and spoke the same words. Repetition in prayer is so important to building our strength and resilience in the Word. Jesus finds the Three asleep again and then again when He returned to them a third time. Then they move forth to the remainder of the Twelve. Verse 42 says: “Rise up, let us go; lo, he who betrays Me is at hand.” Jesus faced the betrayal of man head on. Do you have the repetition of prayer so that we can face our sins and the world head on?
Judas and a force of men including the leaders of the Temple came forth to arrest Jesus. Judas came forth unto Him and kissed Him. This was the sign to the men. They were to take the one Judas kissed. What a sinister act, for only money. They seized Him and Peter drew a sword and smote an ear of a servant. Peter was angry and would not submit to this evil. We are to sheath our sword and the Lord to be in control. Jesus took affront to their behavior to take Him. They treated Him as a thief! Satan had these men and had transformed their behavior and hardened their hearts. Because of their fear of the people they could not take Him in public, so they resorted to a taking under the shadows of night. Do we let our fear dictate how we behave? Is our faith not strong enough to overcome our fears through the Lord?
Verse 50 says: “And they all forsook Him, and fled.” Fulfilling the words Jesus had spoken just hours before and they all, especially Peter, said they would not do. Yet, a man in a linen cloth followed Jesus. Linen was unusual as clothing except among the rich. This man must have been of a well off family. Why is this man following Christ? He was to be arrested and left the linen behind. He fled from them all naked. There is some symbolism here, but the meaning is hidden from me. What could this man and his linen cloth represent?
They led Jesus away to the religious leaders. Peter followed from afar off. Verse 55 says: “And the Chief Priests and all the Council sought for witnesses against Jesus to put Him to death; and found none.” The emptiness of their accusations reigns here. They had no justification for wanting to kill Jesus, except the emptiness of their hearts and the threat to their power. Verse 59 says: “But neither so did their witness agree together.” They continued to have no witnesses with any conviction. The High Priest asked Jesus to answer His accusers. At this point Jesus had said nothin to these men, and continued as such. Verse 61 says: “But He held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the High Priest asked Him, and said unto Him, Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” Jesus answered in Verse 62: “I am; and you shall see the Son of Man sitting on the Hand of Power, and coming in the clouds of Heaven.” Jesus proclaims He is the Messiah and that these men will see Him again at their judgement at the gates of heaven and at the second coming. This infuriated the Council and the High Priest rent his clothes. Then they proclaimed His guilt without testing His claims. They all condemned Him to death, just based on His claim that He was the Messiah. They did not want to hear the truth. Verse 65 says: “And some began to spit on Him, and to cover His Face to buffet Him, and to say unto Him, Prophesy: and the servants did strike Him with the palms of their hands.” Not only did they deny the truth, these men beat Jesus. Do we deny the claims of Jesus as well?
Peter had followed Jesus to the Temple and was away from the trial. A maid who worked for the High Priest saw him by the fire. She asked if he was with Jesus of Nazareth. Verse 68 says: “But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what you say. And he went out into the porch and the rooster crowed.” Peter denies another maid that he was “one of them”. Then he denied another who recognized Peter as a Galilean. Verse 71 says: “But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom you speak.” Peter swore in the name of God. This is worse than cursing, as a swear in His Name is meant to be upheld and truthful, not a lie. In the Old Law this was a major affront to God. He heard the rooster crow again and thereon, he wept. Peter recognized his failure and cried because of his actions. Do we break down in our own failures? When we hear the Word, do we have open ears to hear what the Lord is telling us? Are we open to His message?
