Mary Magdalene had watched Joseph lay Jesus inside the tomb. She and Mary, the mother of James, and Salome, had purchased spices to anoint Him. They went tothe tomb on Sunday morning at the rising of the sun. They were concerned how they would roll the stone away from the entrance. Verse 4 says: "And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great. That problem is solved, but now what is happening in the sepulchre? The two women enter and see a young man sitting on the right side of the raised area where Jesus would have lain. He wore a long white garment. Verse 6 says: "And he said unto them, Be not affrighted: You seek Jesus of Nazareth, Who was crucified: He is risen; He is not here: behold the place where they laid Him." The two Mary's were the first people to know and see with their own eyes that Jesus had been raised from the dead. They held a great honor because of their faith in Him. Even though they did not believe He would do as He said. You don't anoint a body that will not remain dead. What are you anointing in your life that does not deserve it? What great honors are you given?
The man in the tomb charges the two Marys with telling the Disciples. He highlights Peter because Peter had denied Jesus three times only 3 days before! Peter had repented so He was welcome back to the Lord. The standard for Peter is the same standard for us. Seek forgiveness and repent of your sins and Jesus will save you. No matter how great a sin we think we commit, the Lord will carry the weight for you. Have you turned over the weight of your sin? Why are you still carrying it when Jesus has already borne the load?
Verse 8 says: "And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid." These women are amazed and scared because they do not understand how this is possible. They have seen and they believe but they do not understand. Belief without understanding is what we as believers must have! We will never understand the mysteries of this world in their entirety. Let alone the mysteries of God. Submit with your faith and let Jesus inhabit your heart.
He appeared first to Mary Magdalene. He had cast seven devils out of her. Why would He come to her first? Not that it is wrong to go to her, I am simply trying to understand. Was it her devotion to Him? She went and told the Twelve, well actually the Eleven now, and they wept and mourned. Verse 11 says: "And they, when they had heard that He was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not." Faithless men believe with their eyes and their ears. True faith is destined for a deeper connection; one that is built on mutual love and trust. Do we give the same love that the Lord gives to us?
Jesus appears unto two of the remaining Eleven as they walked together. They about face and go to tell the rest of the Disciples. The rest failed to believe. Verse 14 says: "Afterward He appeared unto the Eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen Him after He was risen." Jesus rebukes the Eleven, but particularly the nine doubters. Put your faith in the Lord and those that work for Him. Are you also a doubter? Or do you believe in spite of your doubts?
Now that Jesus is among them, risen from the dead and alive again, He charges the Disciples in Verse 15: "And He said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the Gospel to every creature." The Gospel is for the entire world, not for any special people, as the Old Covenant was. Verses 16-18 continue the charge. Those who are baptized in His Name and believe will be saved. These verses also tell of the powers Jesus, through the Holy Spirit, gives to the Eleven. The power to heal the sick, to cast out demons, speak in tongues, among other things. The calling from the Lord is strong. Do you hear it? We may not be given the same gifts as the Eleven, but we have something to give. What are your gifts and how can you use them to serve the Lord?
Verse 19 says: "So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, He was received up into Heaven, and sat on the Right Hand of God." This was Jesus's last earthly interaction according to Mark. His duty was complete. The new church was ready to begin. The Disciples went forth and preached the Gospel everywhere. The Lord was in them via the Spirit. We are to be like the Disciples and share the Word with the world. Are you prepared for the Lord to work through you? The charge given the Eleven is the same as what we are charged to do. Are you ready?
