Jesus enters the Synagogue on the Sabbath and was watched closely by the Pharisees and scribes. They were looking for something to pry Him about and find His imperfections. Jesus has no fear of these men and their “religion”. Verse 4 says: “And He said unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath days, or to do evil? To save life, or to kill? But they held their peace.” Jesus poses them a question to show that His work is not done in evil, but is done to save. This is a theme for Christ as our Lord and Savior. All His works and time on this earth was done in order to save us! The hardness in the Pharisees hearts would not allow them to see this. After witnessing Jesus restore the withered man’s hand, the Pharisees went to the Herodians to try and make a plan to destroy Him. Are our hearts hard like that of the Pharisees or are we open to the salvation offered through Christ?
Jesus then withdrew to the Sea of Galilee. A great gathering of people followed Him from all over the nearby area. People traveled far to witness and see the great things they had heard that Christ was doing. Jesus asked for a boat to preach from so the people would give Him space to minister the Word to them. With this great throng of people, Jesus needed a platform! Verses 10 & 11 say: “For He had healed many: insomuch that they pressed upon Him for to touch Him, as many as had plagues.” “And unclean spirits, when they saw Him, fell down before Him, and cried, saying, You are the Son of God.” Jesus healed all who came forth and cast away every demon. His power is endless and the people seemed to recognize His Deity. Everyone and everything, even the demons recognized this. If the demons can proclaim the truth of the Lord, what is holding us back from doing the same?
Verse 12 says: “And He straightly charged them that they should not make Him known.” Jesus did not want to be famous for His actions. He understood that He had a much bigger purpose. Do we understand this purpose?
Jesus called unto Him whom He would have and went up into a mountain. Verse 14 says: “And He ordained Twelve, that they should be with Him and that He might send them forth to preach,”. Jesus picks the disciples from potentially many viable suitors. The Twelve also receive power to heal and cast out devils in Jesus’s name. How blessed these men are to be called by Christ himself. Did you know that we are all also called by Christ to be His disciples? That means we are blessed as well! Remember this is the times of sadness for the blessings rendered to us are eternal.
They gathered again in Capernaum and the people gathered again so they could do little. Verse 21 tells us: “And when His friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold of Him: for they said, He is beside Himself.” They did not believe that the Jesus they knew was the Christ. They had doubt and confusion for they did not know the truth. His friends wanted to stop Him before He brought severe troubles about Himself and His family. Little did they understand that the trouble Christ was destined to have was also for them.
In Verses 22-27, the Scribes and Pharisees come down from Jerusalem. They say that Jesus has been acting on behalf of the Devil. In Verse 23 Jesus counters them: “How can Satan cast out Satan?” And continues in Verses 24 & 25: “And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.” “And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.” The counter of Christ against these accusations is perfect for the scenario He finds Himself in. The Pharisees and the Scribes no longer practiced the Old Law for God’s sake but for the sake of themselves. The House of God was divided between God and the Word and man. They were no longer together, acting as an arm of the Lord. Christ means to throw this back in their face, and in ours. Do we serve ourselves like the Pharisees - or do we serve the Lord?
Jesus continues to take affront to the insults against Himself and the Holy Spirit made by the scribes. Verse 29 says: “But he who shall blaspheme against the Holy Spirit hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation.” Do not speak out against the Spirit and His influence over us. The Spirit is a guiding light for all of us. Let the light grow inside you. Do not repress it. Speak only in the positive about the Spirit or Hell is waiting for you.
Jesus’s family arrived amongst the people. The people shout toward Jesus that His family has arrived and are looking for Him. Jesus answered the people in Verse 33: “Who is My mother, or
my brethren?” Jesus then motions toward the crowd. Those eager to hear the Word were His family. He is separating the blood ties of man and the status of a believer. Verse 35 says: “For whosoever shall do the Will of God, the same is My brother, and My sister, and mother.” This could be an insult to His blood family but it is a message that all believers are a family in their own right. Have you accepted your role in Jesus’s family of believers?
