After crossing the Sea of Galilee, a man quickly found Jesus. This man was possessed by a Legion of demons and had given him unnatural powers. Verse 4 says: “Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.” When the demon takes control of the man, there is little that can stop the demons. The man even cried and cut himself with stones to get the demons out, but that was of no use. Or were the demons marking the body to symbolize their control? The demons were in control of this man. Do we allow the demons to take control over our bodies - or is Christ the one in control?
The demons saw Christ and ran to Him. He immediately bowed down and worshipped Him. Verse 7 says: “And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with You, Jesus, Thou Son of the Most High God? I adjure Thee by God, that You torment me not.” Even the demons know who Jesus was. They did not have to be told. This is the power of Christ. In Verse 8 Jesus issues a direct command: “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit.” The demon, named Legion, besought Jesus to not cast Him out of the country, it was a great place for demons to be, for God was not there with the people. Or should I say, the people were not with God. If the demons of this world know Christ on sight, how are we to not know Him also? Only Christ can cast out our demons. Allow Him into your heart and you will be free from the evil that seeks your heart.
The Demons needed somewhere to go and asked to go to the nearby swine herd. Jesus gave them leave to do just that. Once the demons were in the swine, the animals stampeded to the sea and drowned. The animals numbered nearly two thousand. This many demons in one man is hard to fathom. How many demons are we still fighting?
The swine herdsmen fled and spread word throughout the city. The men that heard went out to see the happenings of Jesus. Verse 15 gives the witness of the events: “And they come to Jesus; and see him who was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.” The shock of seeing this infamous man free from his demons shocked and scared these men. The men placed the blame of the death of the hogs on Jesus. Because of this perceived fault and their fear they asked Jesus to leave. These men were heathens even though they were proclaimed Jews. The hogs tell us as much for that was an unclean animal by the Old Law. Had they thought about what they were doing, they would have recognized what Christ had done and bowed down before Him. Only God has power over the devil. Have you given up your powers and submitted to the Lord?
The previously possessed man seeks to go with Jesus and the Disciples. Why wouldn’t he after he was saved from the Legion of demons inside him. Verse 19 says: “Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but said unto him, Go home to your friends, and tell them how great things the Lord has done for you, and has had compassion on you.” This is the same instruction we are given by the Lord. Go tell the World of the great things Christ has done in His compassion for us. Are you testifying in His name to the world?
Jesus returned to Capernaum and the people were there waiting for Him on the shoreline. Even one of the rulers of the Synagogue, named Jairus, was there to welcome Him. Jairus was there to save his daughter’s life. He fell at Jesus’s feet and made his plea that Christ save her. Jairus seems to have recognized that Jesus had the power to save her and his desperation led him to Jesus. Or was it faith? Jesus agreed to go see his daughter and the throng of people followed Him to Jairus’s home. Do we reach out to the Lord through our faith or through desperation?
A woman, Veronica, was amongst the crowd. Verse 26 tells us: “And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse.” She had tried everything that man could try on her and spent all her money trying to be cured of her sickness. She resorted to Jesus as the only thing that could heal her. She pressed behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment. Verse 28 gives us her thoughts: “For she said, If I may touch but His clothes, I shall be whole.” This level of belief in the power of Christ is something we should all exhibit. Upon her touching his clothes, she was healed immediately. Verse 30 says: “And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that virtue had gone out of Hin, turned Him about in the press, and said, Who touched My clothes?” The woman came forth and confessed her actions to the Lord. Jesus answers her confession in Verse 34: “And He said unto her, Daughter, your faith has made you whole; go in peace, and be whole of your plague.” Faith allowed her to receive the healing from Jesus through only a touch of his clothing. What can Faith do for us?
Upon the ending of the interaction with the woman, a servant of Jairus’s home told Jairus that his daughter had perished. When Jesus heard this he said in Verse 36: “Be not afraid, only believe.” This is also for us! We need not have fear, just believe! Jesus took only Peter, James, and John with Him to the home of Jairus. The hired mourners were already at the home when Jesus arrived. Verse 39 says: “And when He was come in, He said unto them, Why do you make this ado, and weep? The damsel is not dead, but sleeps.” The mourners laughed at Him and Jesus ordered them out of the house. Jesus takes Jairus, his wife, and the 3 Disciples with Him into the damsel’s room. Verse 41 tells us: “And He took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Tabitha cumi, which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto you, arise.” She did so abruptly and was alive. Christ here overcomes death in the little girl. This foreshadows Christ ability to overcome His death on the Cross at Calvary. We cannot comprehend the level of power held by Jesus, it is not within our abilities as men. However, we can submit to Him and allow Him to work in our lives. Is your faith like Veronica’s and Jairus’s?
